Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements to join 171 Melfort Phoenix Air Cadets?

First, the prospective cadet must have reached their 12th birthday and be younger than 19 years of age. They must also meet the requirements as outlined in our “How Do I Join?” page.

When do I attend?

Visit us most Tuesday evenings at 6:45 pm at the Melfort Unit Comprehensive Collegiate. We parade between September and June. It’s best to Contact Us to be sure we’ll be there on the given Tuesday evening, as there are times our training takes place at other locations.

How long must I stay in Air Cadets once I join?

A cadet is free to leave the Air Cadet program at any time; however, you are encouraged to try the program for at least three months before you make your decision.  The Air Cadet program is probably different than anything you’ve done before, and while many cadets feel quite comfortable with things right from the beginning, others take a few weeks or months to get a true feeling of everything.  Once you’ve been involved for a few months, get used to the program, and make a few friends, we’re sure you will find that you really enjoy being an Air Cadet.  We will teach you everything you need to know as an Air Cadet, but just to give you an idea of what will be expected, here are a few of the requirements of you:

You must learn to care for your uniform, pressing it and polishing your boots.

You must learn to act maturely and responsibly.

You must attend weekly parades regularly, and inform the squadron staff when you will not be able to attend a parade.

You must be willing to work and learn in a team environment, accepting challenges and learning from mistakes.

This may seem like a lot, but we’re always here to help and you will have plenty of time to learn these important skills.

Who joins cadets?

With over 50,000 Air Cadets across Canada, we’re an organization with a proud history. Many former cadets say that the Cadet Program gave them a head start in their successful careers. For example, did you know that astronaut Chris Hadfield and world junior biathlon champion Jean-Phillippe Le Guellec were once Air Cadets? Maybe someday we’ll be using your name on our site!

Do I have to join the Canadian Forces after I’m done Air Cadets?

Absolutely not! While part of the program is stimulating an interest in the air element of the Canadian Forces, and we borrow a number of things from the Royal Canadian Air Force for use in our program, there is absolutely no obligation to serve in the Canadian Forces. Some Air Cadets do choose to join the Canadian Forces, and their cadet training can help them succeed, but it is strictly their choice.

Is the Cadet program for juvenile delinquents?

No. Cadets is for any young adult between the ages of 12 and 19 who would like to learn leadership, citizenship, survival, drill and deportment, effective speaking, and so much more; and do so in a safe, team setting. Our program is designed to help today’s adolescents develop into tomorrow’s leaders.
